One person dead after RV collides with train in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC) - One person was killed Monday morning after a motor home collided with a train in Georgetown County.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenneth Johnson is on the scene of the accident. The collision occurred between Andrews and Georgetown on Highway 521 just before 17-A near 9 Mile Curve.

The coroner says the driver of the motor home ignored warning lights and crashed into a crossing gate. The train slammed into the RV, killing the passenger.

Johnson said the driver survived the accident, and has been taken the Medical University of South Carolina. EMS workers waiting at the railroad crossing saw the crash, and tried to help the victims until firefighters arrived.

The coroner is not releasing the name of the victims at this time until he is able to confirm if they have family in the area. The driver and passenger of the RV were hearing impaired. The RV has a Florida license plate.

The train is a CSX commercial train, carrying about eight empty cars. It was on the way to pick up cargo.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
