COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A Midlands professor is being recognized nationally for his efforts in the classroom.

"This place made me a better teacher," said Columbia College English professor Dr. John Zubizarreta, the U.S. Professor of the Year.

"That little ol' Columbia College, little ol' South Carolina could have National Honor Student of the Year and National Professor of the Year, what that says is this is a very special place," said Zubizarreta.

The New York native has been teaching students at the all-women college for the last 22 years. Doctor Z, as he is known on campus, emphasizes collaborative learning and discussion-based teaching.

"You learn to teach them in a way that is powerful, that resonates and is effective," described Zubizarreta. "And that just happens to coincide with what kind of teacher I wanted to be."
The U.S. Professor of the Year program cited Doctor Z's extraordinary dedication, impact and involvement with undergraduates. He was nominated by his own colleagues and students, beating out 100 other semi-finalists.
The Palmetto State professor tells each and every one of his students he's going to be there from beginning to end. "I always tell students when I'm recruiting, when I'm saying goodbye till they graduate, I'm all yours, and I mean that," he said.
