Newberry highway closed after truck collision spills diesel fuel

NEWBERRY, SC (WIS) - A stretch of Highway 56 in Newberry County is closed after two tractor trailers collided, spilling diesel fuel across the highway.

Sheriff Lee Foster said the highway is closed between Brehemer Road and Mudlick Road while crews clean up the spill. Foster didn't know how long it will be before the road is opened.

The trucks crashed sometime before 4:40pm, according to Foster, who said one of the trucks caught on fire. One person was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center. His condition is currently unknown.

Sheriff Foster said the wreck happened in a very remote part of Newberry County, northwest of Silverstreet heading towards the Laurens County line. Foster said most of the traffic along Highway 56 is semi traffic, so it won't affect many commuters on their way home.
