Veterans are all around us, even if we don't know it

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - You never know when you might meet a veteran. In fact, they could be sitting right next to you at a restaurant and you would never know.

A warm short stack of pancakes is one of life's simple pleasures, and something Jimmy Warr likes to indulge in almost daily. So you may have seen him at IHOP or one of his other favorite breakfast joints before, but if you did you probably didn't realize all of the stories he could tell.

"Well I was single, a little crazy," said Warr, his reason for extending his tour in Vietnam twice.

But what happened in his three years there was no laughing matter. Jimmy won't talk about it, but he explained how it changed him. "I don't really get close to many people and I think that's part of it, because you lose so many of your friends," said Warr. "I just don't really get close to people."

While we talked, Jimmy pulled out his Vietnam War Veteran hat. When we asked him why he wears it, the answer brought tears to his eyes. "I'm proud," he said. "I'm proud."

When Jimmy came back from Vietnam, people didn't thank him for his service. But he says that has changed. Now, Veterans Day -- along with his favorite morning treat -- gives him a lot to smile about.
