NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A confidential tip given through Crimestoppers has led to the arrest of a man wanted in a July 22 triple shooting in the Helena section of Newberry County.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said 25-year old Michael Dewayne Wise of Prosperity was taken into custody without incident just after midnight Tuesday. He was found hiding under a bed at an apartment in Grant Apartments in Newberry.

Deputies say three people were standing in a yard on Gray Street in Helena in the early morning hours of July 22 when a van drove into the area and began firing at the people standing in the yard.

Three people were shot in the legs and none of the injuries were life threatening.  According to investigators, all of those shot were shot indiscriminately and not victims of targeted violence.

A short time later, deputies discovered a van matching the description of that used in the shooting abandoned in a ditch near to the shooting.

Michael Wise and his cousin, Anthony, were both identified as suspects in the days after the shooting. Anthony Wise, 21, surrendered shortly after being named a suspect, but Michael Wise remained on the run until Tuesday.

Foster said that the arrest was a direct result of a Crimestoppers tip on the location of Wise.

Foster praised Crimestoppers as a valuable tool in the communication and cooperation between law enforcement and the community and to many law enforcement investigations.

Michael Wise is charged with three counts of Attempted Murder and is in custody awaiting a bond hearing.
