Three officers, four inmates injured in SC prison fight

BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (WIS) — Three officers and four inmates have been hospitalized after a fight inside a maximum security prison in South Carolina.

Corrections Department spokesman Josh Gelinas says the officers were trying to break up an inmate fight at around 9 a.m. Monday in a dormitory at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville.

Gelinas says the officers suffered cuts and/or stab wounds, and all three were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.  Two of them have been treated and released, while a third remains hospitalized.

The four inmates were also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries, Gelinas says. Gelinas says all the inmates' injuries were not life-threatening.

Gelinas says the prison that houses 1,700 male inmates has been placed on lockdown. Investigators are interviewing other inmates in the dorm to see what started the fight.
