Arrest made in Friday fatal shooting

EUTAWVILLE, SC (WIS) - One person has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting Friday night in Orangeburg County.

Orangeburg County Sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting on Lakeview Road near Moncks Corner Road in Eutawville just before 5pm Friday. Deputies had received a call from a concerned citizen who found a body lying in the road.

Sheriff Barbara Walters says, "the investigation lead us to Charleston County where our suspect, James Michael Jones, 23, was in custody on unrelated charges. Jones has made statements to investigators regarding his involvement in the Eutawville man's death. Jones and the victim were acquaintances although the reason for the shooting is still unclear."

Walters adds "the Eutawville Police Department and North Charleston Police Department assisted us in responding to the initial call and interviewing this suspect. We commend their efforts to work collaboratively and expeditiously throughout the night to aid in our investigation.

"I am elated by the dedication and commitment of the deputies and investigators of the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office. Over the past three weeks, officers have risen to the challenges, investigating multiple murders, and in all cases arrests have been made. Daily these men and women assist the residents of Orangeburg County with a myriad of issues and they are unwavering in their commitment to protect and serve."

Jones is currently being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
