Apartment fire displaces a dozen people

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Several people are displaced after an afternoon fire a Columbia apartment complex.

Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says firefighters were called to the Landings at Forest Acres Apartments on Covenant Road off of North Beltline around 1:45 PM. Firefighters fought the blaze for an hour before they were able to get in under control.

The fire started in one of the bottom floor apartments near a heater. Officials are not sure of the exact cause of the fire, but they do not suspect foul play. The fire blazed through the second story of building as well as through the roof.

Chief Jenkins says that the fire did $300,000 worth of damage to the building and displaced 12-14 people who lived in 8 of the units.
