WINNSBORO, SC (WIS) - The Fairfield County School Board, long under fire and accused of high spending and micro-managing, has four open seats that will be filled next Tuesday.

In the last year, the board has seen their schools put on probation by an accreditation agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. They've also seen their legislators try to take away some of their power.

State legislators Creighton Coleman and Boyd Brown proposed a bill that would allow them to handpick new board members and give all financial power to an outside group of volunteers with financial backgrounds. The bills are now in the state Supreme Court's hands.

Four seats on the board are up for grabs, and three people on the current board are running again.

Catherine Kennedy, the former chair, faces challenger Andrea Harrison. Current board member Rickey Johnson faces Bobby Cunningham.

Ron Smith and current board member Henry Miller are both running unopposed. Smith was actually according to that pending legislation supposed to be appointed to the board. But instead of waiting, he says he decided to just go ahead and run for himself.
The election is next Tuesday.
