ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Deputies are investigating the discovery of a woman beaten and left for dead on the side of a rural road in Orangeburg County.

According to deputies, a passer-by found 47-year-old Debbie Dozier on the side of Jumbo Road around 5:30 Friday, unconscious and beaten with serious head injuries.

The unnamed man called the sheriff's office after he said he recognized her as a woman he went to high school with.

"She was a wife, a daughter, a sister, a stepmother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, and just a wonderful person," said Dozier's stepdaughter, who didn't want to be identified.

Dozier's stepdaughter says her family immediately knew things weren't good when they got a call about Debbie on Friday.

"The hospital wouldn't give us any information, all they would say is that we needed to come to Richland immediately," said Dozier's stepdaughter.

By the time the family got to Palmetto Richland Hospital, Debbie was brain dead and on life support.

Dozier's stepdaughter had a chance to make a promise. "I promised her that I would take care of my dad and my granddad who she had been taking care of for the past 20 years and to let her know it was going to be okay, that hopefully we would find out who did this to her."

Family members say her last known whereabouts were at the Husqvarna plant working in the kitchen. They're not sure what time she got off of work.  They say the plant is less than two miles from where she was found.

"We would love to know why," said Dozier's stepdaughter.

While they try to come to terms with her death, family members say they know Debbie's spirit lives on.

"We found out that her liver and both of her kidneys are going to the Medical University of South Carolina to 3 recipients and that her heart and lungs are going to Pennsylvania to 2 recipients."

No other details will be released about the investigation into Dozier's death until an autopsy is completed Tuesday in Newberry.

If you know anything about this incident, you are urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
