Perspective: WIS Editorial on 22nd AT&T African American History Calendar

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - WIS just participated in the unveiling of the 22nd anniversary edition of the AT&T African American History Calendar.

This beautiful publication celebrates the achievements, diversity and rich cultural heritage of African Americans in South Carolina, and is designed to help students learn more about these distinguished people.

The individuals honored in this year's calendar represent educators, community leaders and activists, entrepreneurs, a vocalist, and yes, even a power couple!

They provide stunning role models for our young people and even a few of us older people, something sorely needed given the negative press we are consistently exposed to. These folks represent the best in humanity, the drive to succeed, to serve, and to lift one another up.

WIS, the South Carolina Dept of Education, SCETV, The State Newspaper, and USC's School of Journalism and Mass Communications have once again partnered with AT&T to contribute to the success of this calendar.

As a proud sponsor, WIS keeps the calendar alive throughout the year with monthly vignettes featuring the various honorees. They all have incredible stories and we bring these stories to life as our anchors profile each month's selection.

The 2011 calendar is available at, and I encourage you to go online and download yours today.
