CAMDEN, SC (WIS) - Camden police say two men on their bicycles stole $12,000 worth of meat from a restaurant there.
Inside Mad's Restaurant in downtown Camden, there are a few favorites that aren't on the menu this week. One of them is hog jaws. "It's too thick to be bacon and its got meat on it so its not fat back, it's a huge hit," said Lynn Roden. "We've had a lot of complaints we haven't had it the last couple of days."
That's because someone cleaned them out Monday night. Hog jaws were just one item on a long list. "They took Boston butts, they took hog jaws, they took salmon fillets," said Roden.
It's quite possible the thieves knew about cooking, or at least eating. Not only did they steal enough meet to feed about 100 people, they took enough ketchup to go along with it.
Police say they caught the thieves red-handed, with red meat in hand. A Camden police officer spotted the cyclists struggling to balance a load on the handlebars. "We just can't believe they tried to get away with food on bicycles, cases of it!" exclaimed Roden.
Still, the restaurant says it was not a total loss. "We were able to get back some chicken, we got back Boston butts and we got back two cases of ketchup," said Roden.
And that's the upside to finding the thieves that may have been thinking with their stomachs. "Why food and not money?" asked Roden. "That's what baffles us."
The state Department of Health and Environmental Control said they will not do an investigation into the safety of the leftover food, but they will check it out and make sure the recovered food is still safe.
