COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - An Awendaw fisherman has broken a South Carolina saltwater record, landing a greater amberjack weighing 22 pounds more than the previous mark.
The Department of Natural Resources says John Beauford caught his 123-pound prize Sept. 7 after setting out from the Isle of Palms marina. The previous record fish was caught by Lee Fredrick of Murrell's Inlet in August of 2008. It had weighed 100 pounds, eight ounces.
Beauford was fishing aboard the "Wasabi," owned by Michael Owen of Taylorsville, Ga. The two had released a 50-pound greater amberjack before landing the record-setter.
