Perspective: WIS editorial on U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The strange story of an odd candidate for U.S. Senate seems to get stranger by the day.  And the people of South Carolina have a right to ask, "what's going on here"?

Alvin Greene is the lawful nominee of the Democratic Party to challenge GOP Senator Jim DeMint in November.  But Mr. Greene not only faces a felony obscenity charge.  His comments to the media are making it even harder for me to believe he's a serious candidate.

Now, he does have positions on issues, as he told WIS News 10's Drew Stewart in a recent interview.  But Mr. Greene, if you are a serious candidate, don't talk to reporters about putting your likeness on action figures or about how you want Denzel Washington to play you in the movie version of your life. The obscenity charge you face has already placed your candidacy under a cloud.  Get your legal problems resolved, then start talking in depth about  issues.

WIS does not endorse political candidates.  But I do feel the need to comment on your campaign so far, and to fault your fellow Democrats, the media, and the political watchdogs in this state who failed to expose your legal problems in advance of the primary.

South Carolina needs a good debate on the future of our state and nation. Your candidacy so far has been little more than an absurd distraction.

That's my perspective.  I'd like to hear from you.
