MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A former mayor of North Charleston Thursday night shot and killed himself following an altercation in Mt. Pleasant.
Mt. Pleasant police responded to the Long Point Road shooting shortly before midnight Thursday.
According to Mt. Pleasant police, one man was shot in the upper torso in an apartment at Edgewater Plantation on Wando View Lane. Officers stopped former mayor Bobby Kinard, whom they believed to be the suspect, as he was leaving the complex, but he shot and killed himself, said Captain Stan Gragg.
North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey issued the following statement:
"We are very sorry to hear of the untimely death of Mayor Bobby Kinard. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. As a former mayor of North Charleston, we will provide his family any and all services and assistance needed in this difficult time. In his honor, flags will be flown at half-staff."
Police have not identified the other shooting victim or disclosed a motive for the incident.
