SC football assistants get raises

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Six South Carolina football assistants are getting raises this offseason. The university says this week it's paying out more than $2 million for Steve Spurrier's nine assistants. That's an increase of $320,000 from last year.

Ellis Johnson's salary tops the list. The assistant head coach for defense is doubling his pay, to $700,000. The board of trustees approved that deal in February.

Athletic director Eric Hyman says the increase was a counteroffer to another Southeastern Conference team that was pursuing Johnson.

Other assistants who got raises this year were special teams coach and recruiting coordinator Shane Beamer, running backs coach Jay Graham, tight ends coach Jeep Hunter, defensive line coach Brad Lawing and quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus.
