COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WIS) - The woman injured in a wreck involving Mayor-elect Steve Benjamin remains in the hospital but is making small improvements.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported Thursday that an attorney for Deborah Rubens says she has a brain injury, a broken collarbone and a broken pelvis. Rick Detwiler said she squeezed a friend's hand Wednesday and has opened her eyes temporarily.
She has been in a coma since her Toyota Tercel collided with Steve Benjamin's Mercedes SUV about 6 a.m. April 21. Benjamin had won a run-off election hours earlier to become Columbia's first African-American mayor. He was on his way to media interviews and wasn't hurt in the wreck.
Rubens was on her way to work at the Clarion Hotel, just blocks from the accident scene.
Columbia police are investigating. They haven't released any reports, transcripts or audios of 911 calls.
