BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, SC (WIS) - What started out as a chance for deputies to serve a Batesburg-Leesville man with a family court bench warrant ended with the man also being charged with operating a methamphetamine lab according to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities say they went to a Fairfield Road home to serve 37-year-old Rusty Allen Murphy with a warrant that was issued after he did not make a court-ordered child support payment.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they say they smelled a strong chemical odor at the rear of the home that they recognized as a sign that a methamphetamine lab.
After searching the home, deputies say they located several items used to manufacture the drug.
Murphy is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.
