USC's green dorms receive Earth Day energy honors

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Earth Day on the USC campus included celebrating the new honors dorm meeting energy standards.

Thursday university officials announced that the new building is the first on campus to meet gold standards by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The honors residence opened in August. The university's other green building, West Quad, earned silver LEED status.

"Green has been around for a long time," said Michael Koman of USC's Office of Sustainability. "Through the centuries and the millennia, and what we've done is taken a lot off the shelf and proven technologies. You won't see a lot of lot of high-tech and renewable sources yet, but there's a lot of things we can do that are at no additional cost."

USC officials say the honors building uses 36 percent less energy, and more than 30 percent less water than other campus dorms.
