COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Brian DeQuincey Newman is an attorney who has lived in District Two for four years.

He says he wants to use his background as a prosecutor to fight gang activity and his number one goal would be protecting public safety resources, making the district and city a safer place to work and live.

The following bio was provided to us by the candidate:

Service is a family tradition for Brian DeQuincey Newman, a Columbia, South Carolina native. At only 27 years-old, Brian has quickly proven to be a man of service in his own right.
In 2005 he graduated cum laude from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a degree in Business Administration and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina's School of Law in 2008

After law school, Brian went to work in the Richland County Solicitor's Office where he gained invaluable experience prosecuting every type of crime from petty thefts and assault to murder. He saw first-hand the cost of failing to address rising gang violence in our neighborhoods.

"I've been on the front lines in the fight against gangs," he explains. "I'm tired of seeing so many young and promising lives either lost or ruined and I intend to do something about it."
Brian is a member of the South Carolina Bar, the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina and the South Carolina Association for Justice. Currently in private practice with Rikard & Moses, his professional focus is on criminal defense, personal injury, and medical malpractice. When time permits, Brian provides legal assistance to families in need, free of charge.

Brian is part of the new generation of leaders moving forward to bring bold, innovative solutions to new challenges like rising crime and gang violence that keeps District 2 and the City of Columbia in constant peril.

"We must strengthen public safety by ensuring our men and women in uniform have the resources they need. The people deserve better and I'm going to make sure all the people get what we're paying for."

The youngest of four children, Brian Newman is a rising star on the political landscape. He is active in politics on a local and national level and has worked on and organized a variety of political races at the local and state level.

His father, Clifton Newman, has served South Carolina as an At-Large Circuit Court Judge for nearly 10 years. His mother, Patricia Newman, serves her family as a dedicated homemaker and serves her community as an active member of the church named for Brian's uncle civil rights leader I. DeQuincey Newman. Brian is a member and attends, along with his parents, I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church in Columbia.
