How can a colonoscopy actually prevent colon cancer?

Medical science has determined that 95% of colon cancers develop from polyps. This is a slow process- averaging 15 years. If we do a colonoscopy before the polyp becomes cancerous, we destroy it- thus eliminating the risk of cancer.
