A Bill A Day: Consolidating county school districts

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A bill introduced Wednesday in the State House would consolidate school districts across South Carolina.

House bill 4618 is sponsored by Reps. Bill Herbkersman and Shannon Erickson, both Republicans from Beaufort.

If the bill passes, each county will only be allowed to have one school district starting July 1, 2012. Currently there are 85 school districts in the state, but only 46 counties.

Under the bill county council would still be able to create another school district within the county. However, the extra district would have to be fully funded by the county and would receive no state money.

The bill was referred to the Education and Public Works Committee. To read the full text of the bill, click here.
