More information about Welvista

Q.        Can you tell us about Welvista?

A.        Welvista is a non-profit organization providing access to prescription medications to the uninsured.  Partnering with 12 pharmaceutical companies who donate medications and a network of over 4,000 healthcare providers, Welvista provides a single point of access to over 200 essential medications.  Welvista brings an affordable solution to bridge a tremendous gap in healthcare accessibility.

Anyone who does not have health insurance but needs prescription medication can apply for the Welvista program.

Q:        How is Welvista helping the uninsured in S.C.?

A:        A lot of families in South Carolina cannot afford health insurance. Many parents have to choose between putting food on the table and buying desperately-needed prescription medicine.  Many people have chronic medical conditions that go untreated because they can't afford to get their medicine.  That is why Welvista is here.

Q.        From the South Carolina Hospital Association's perspective, do you see the need for Welvista's services growing in S.C.?

A.        Yes.  S.C. is one of the unhealthiest states in the nation.  There are over 700,000 medically uninsured people in our state.  The majority of these people do not qualify for federal assistance programs such as Medicaid and Medicare.

The Hospital Association and its member hospitals are always looking for ways to improve access for the uninsured patients we serve.  When an uninsured patient has a chronic disease and cannot afford the prescription medication they need it can lead to emergency rooms visits and hospital admissions.    Welvista is partnering with 7 of the leading hospitals in S.C. to provide access to prescription medication to the uninsured.     By helping these patients access to their medications we help avoid costly readmissions and emergency room visits for medications.

Q:        Can you tell us how people can access the program?

A:        Our mail-order pharmacy receives donated brand name prescription medications from pharmaceutical companies.  Patients complete a one page application and provide the necessary documentation to get qualified and then the medicine is delivered through the mail  to their home.

Q:        How do our viewers apply for Welvista?

A:        Applications are available on our website welvista.org or you can call our toll free number at 1-800-763-059 to qualify. Patients must meet the following criteria:

  • South Carolina resident
  • Must meet income criteria at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level
  • Must not have Medicaid, Medicare, private health insurance or VA benefits
  • Provide a $20 application processing fee

Q:        If a viewer would like to talk to someone about your program how would they do that?

A:        I would encourage them to call our toll free number at 1-800-763-0059 and speak to one of our representatives who would be happy to help them.

Q:        You mentioned the demand for your services has increased. Can you tell us how you are handling the operational side of meeting this demand?

A:        Like other non-profits, Welvista is struggling to meet the significant increase in demand for our services.  We don't want to have to turn any patients away.  We are doing everything we can to get additional funding and identify new partners who are willing to help support our efforts to assist more South Carolinians with their medication.

Q:        Is there anything else you would like to say to our viewers today?

A:        Yes, if you know someone who does not have health insurance and needs

prescription medicine tell them to call Welvista or go to our website www.welvista.org.
