COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - House bill 4185 was pre-filed by Rep. Todd Rutherford in November and sent to the Education and Public Works Committee. The bill increases the maximum speed limit that can be set for South Carolina highways.
Currently the maximum speed limit is 70 miles per hour. If the bill passes, the maximum speed limit will become 80 miles per hour.
This doesn't mean all 70-mph highways will automatically have speed limits of 80 miles per hour. It simply means the Department of Transportation has the ability to set higher limits.
If the bill passes, it would take effect upon the governor's signature.
