Perspective: WIS editorial on holiday giving

STATEWIDE - In this lousy economy, charitable organizations are really feeling the crunch, as the need for critical services is greater than ever. At the holidays, many of us contribute to charities, and to help guide our giving, South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond has issued his annual Scrooges and Angels list.  You might want to check it out to ensure that your donations are used wisely.

This year's list includes more Angels than Scrooges from our state, and two of the most efficient non-profit organizations are right here in Columbia. Hammond says the Palmetto Conservation Foundation spends 90% of funds raised on its stated purpose, and the Trinity Housing Corporation designates 93% to its intended purpose. Hammond also named an Honorary Angel -- Honor Flight South Carolina.  Honor Flight flies World War Two vets to Washington, DC to visit the National World War Two memorial and Arlington Cemetery.

So before you write that check, check out the Secretary of State's website at , or call the Charities Division at 1-888-242-7484.  You can also help those in need by giving your time and talents to a worthy cause.

That's my perspective. What's yours?
