Lexington One Statement on Incident

Monday, September 21, 2009

LEXINGTON, S.C. - On Thursday, September 17, 2009, a bus driver dropped off students who attend the half-day four-year-old afternoon kindergarten class at Red Bank Elementary School. This normally occurs about 11:35 a.m.

The driver then proceeded four miles to the bus parking lot at White Knoll High School, parked and left the bus.

Another bus driver returning to the parking lot noticed that a student was standing beside a bus parked on the lot. That driver then approached the student, took the child into the Transportation Office located at WKHS and reported the incident to the White Knoll Attendance Area Bus Supervisor Susie Navarro. Navarro then reported the incident to Transportation Director Tim Stepp.

Navarro also immediately contacted the student's parents/guardians and took the student home.

Acting in accordance with Board Policy and district procedure, the staff immediately began a thorough investigation, informed Human Resources of the incident and placed the employee on leave pending an inquiry into the situation. This is standard operating procedure.

The district takes any incident like this very seriously and is investigating this incident very carefully. Our primary concern is always the health and safety of our students.
