Ft. Jackson soldier in basic training dies of possible pneumonia

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - An Army soldier in basic combat training at Fort Jackson died at a Columbia hospital Thursday night from what was initially diagnosed as pneumonia.

Army officials say 23-year-old Spc. Christopher Hogg was admitted to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital on September 3 with fever and respiratory problems.

Spc. Hogg died at around 9:00pm Thursday, according to officials. The exact cause of death is being determined.

Hogg, who was from Deltona, Florida, was in his fifth week of training with D Company, 3rd Battalion 13th Infantry Regiment, which is scheduled to graduate Oct 15.

His family has been in Columbia since Monday. A memorial service is being planned for early next week.
