New iPhone app gives guided tours of Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - It has all you've ever wanted to know about the history of the Holy City, and it fits in the palm of your hand.

"I went through and downloaded it and it was amazing," said Kevin Lucas, in town visiting his brother.

"It" is called City Slicker.  It's an application for an iPhone that gives you a guided tour through the city.

It's was the first application of its kind and while others have followed, it all started right here in Charleston.

"I first got the idea for City Slicker over a decade ago," said City Slicker founder Chris Metts.

Back then Metts envisioned kiosks set up around town, that is, until the iPhone came out.

"The iPhone was without a doubt the first one that came about that could actually do what we needed it to do," said Metts.

Here's how it works. The GPS in the phone finds where you are in the city and maps out all the interesting areas around you.

It tells you how to get there and once you arrive a video of a tour guide appears on the screen.

"We have taken his tour that he gives every day and turned it into an iPhone app," said Metts.

City Slicker even has a map of all the public restrooms in the area for when nature calls.

Brothers Kevin and Jeff Lucas can't get enough of this new way of getting around Charleston.

"Once we started playing with it a little bit I was like, let's go do this.  It looks really cool," said Lucas.

"For 99 cents it's amazing," said Jeff Lucas.
