Midlands, Charlotte pastors give away food

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Free food got dozens of people out of their beds Saturday morning.
A Midlands pastor coordinated the giveaway and wants other churches to do the same.

Chicken, squash, peppers and sodas were just some of the food given away for free.

"We can't depend on the government for everything because I think the church has a responsibility to help the poor," said Pastor Eddie Guess.

Guess and the members of Good News Global Ministries partnered with a Charlotte pastor to distribute 20,000 pounds of food.

"We have delighted in what we're doing," said Guess.

Volunteers filled the bags and passed them out, filling up boxes for the men and woman in line.

"We've had people out here today that are aging, those in wheelchairs, those who have physical problems," said Guess.

Despite the heat, dozens lined up to get the help.

"It's a blessing," said one woman. "It's nice. It's nice."

Pastor Guess didn't expect so many people to show up.

"I'm excited. I'm elated. I'm joyfully overjoyed," he said.

Now he hopes the goodwill spreads.

"We believe by doing this perhaps it will encourage other ministries, faith-based ministries to do the same," said Guess.
All the food was donated by businesses in the Charlotte area.
