Hurricane Hunters

WIS Fact File
Hurricanes occur all over the world, but not everyone calls them hurricanes.
Near Japan, these ferocious storms are known as "typhoons".
Near Australia, locals call hurricanes "willy-willies".

As amazing as it seems, a brave group made up of members of the Air Force Reserve, the Hurricane Hunters, fly in and out of tropical storms and hurricanes.

The plane collects critical information while following what is known as a symmetrical flight path through the storms.

As you can guess, these Hurricane Hunter flights get very bumpy. The Hunters know, however, the critical information they collect is worth it. Their flights not only keep those of us on the ground informed, they help keep us safe.

And speaking of safer, the Hurricane Hunters have never lost a plane to rough weather. Thanks Hurricane Hunters!
