Perspective: WIS Editorial on hunger in South Carolina by general manager Donita Todd

Have you ever been hungry because you couldn't afford to buy food for yourself or your family?  In South Carolina right now, thousands of people have to make the agonizing choice between paying for food and paying their utilities or medical bills.  Hunger in our state is real -- and getting worse.

Fortunately for hundreds of thousands of our neighbors, the good people at Harvest Hope Food Bank are helping to meet the need.  But they need more help. Listen to this.  In the first three months of this year, Harvest Hope served nearly 300,000 families and individuals a total of 900,000 meals or food packages.  That's up 51% from the first three months of '08. 51%!  And 93% of Harvest Hope's clients are working people or families.

By any definition, this is a crisis. And Harvest Hope works miracles every day.  Please help.  Give to the WIS "Pack a Pickup Food Drive for Harvest Hope" this Wednesday.  Go to Chick-fil-A locations in Columbia, Lexington, and Sumter, and help us fill pickups with non-perishable food.  Thanks to Jim Hudson and Newsome Automotive for donating the pickups. And we hope to see you on Wednesday.

That's my perspective.  What's yours?
