Perspective: WIS editorial on support for the arts

Columbia has many wonderful celebrations of the arts. From Artista Vista to Color the Arts, to Art in the Park and many more, the performing and visual arts have been showcased, and many events draw good crowds. And in this dire economy, that's a good thing! The arts lift our spirits at times like these, yet some are increasingly vulnerable to budget cuts.

City, county and state governments are facing tough decisions about what arts funding to reduce or eliminate.  All non-profit organizations are feeling the pinch. Contributions are down, and yet the needs have increased. That's where you come in. If you can donate your time, talents or dollars, please do so. You can help determine whether your favorite ballet company, art gallery, or community organization is even in business this time next year.

And if you have a cultural event to promote, please send a news release to us at or click on our website's community tab, and enter the event on our community calendar.

Do your weary psyche a favor and support the arts! That's my perspective.  I'd like to hear from you!
