5k run to honor the Charleston Nine

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Firefighters have set up a 5K Run For The Nine will take place on June 14 at Palmetto Island Park.  Firefighters believe this event has plenty of benefits.

"Remembering the guys, keeping awareness up and involving the community," said firefighter Jason Williamson.

Kids under twelve will run for free.  There will be fire trucks on hand and a band. This is more than just a 3.1 mile run. "It's going to be a family event, not just for the runners."

So far, all proceeds from events for the Charleston Nine have gone to their families.  But money for the 5K run will be helping other areas.

"The first is going to further education and training opportunities for local firefighters," added Jason Ligon.

Proceeds are also going to RIP packs.  They are hoping to have one in every truck.

"A duplicate of the air packs you see on the back of a fire fighter. If a firefighter is down, the team can take this in and assist them with air."

The city only has 5 RIP packs; they cost $3,500 each. Every step that's taken in this run will be for a good cause.

"Charleston is an active, outdoorsy community and we wanted to involve the community in that way."
