LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) - Lexington County officials say a dangerous man with a hot temper is on the loose.
Authorities say 24-year-old Jonathan Mathis of Lexington is wanted for hitting his girlfriend on multiple occasions and consciously alluding law enforcement.
It was a trip to the doctor's office that set off the search for the fugitive.
Authorities say a violent outburst in this Irmo parking lot was the last straw for Jonathan Mathis' girlfriend.
"He is very hot tempered and very dangerous," says Sheriff James Metts.
Metts says Mathis' hot temper got out of control when he asked his girlfriend to join him for his doctor's appointment, and she said no.
"He ended up hitting her with his hand in the face several times," says Metts. "And this is not the first time this has happened with this victim."
Metts says Mathis continued to hit her when they arrived home, and she called 911.
"By the time law enforcement got there he had calmed down, and we weren't able to arrest him at the time. But during the investigation we got warrants for his arrest," says Metts.
Metts says the girlfriend has gone into hiding, and so has Mathis.
"He's been eluding us, he knows that we're looking for him,"
The sheriff says Mathis even called in to see if he was wanted.
"He even told the investigator he was going to turn himself in but he didn't," says Metts.
Metts believes Mathis is still in the Lexington area, hiding out in friends' houses and possibly his own.
"He also has cameras and guns set up around his house to watch people going and coming," says Metts.
Mathis is 5'7" tall and weighs 155 pounds. If you see him, call 1-888-CRIME-SC.
