(Washington-AP) March 17, 2007 - Anti-war demonstrations are being held in many cities across the nation and around the world as the Iraq conflict enters its fifth year.
Thousands marched Saturday from the Lincoln Memorial to the Pentagon in the footsteps of an epic demonstration four decades ago against the Vietnam war.
Smaller protests were held in other US cities, stretching to Tuesday's four-year anniversary of the Iraq invasion. In Los Angeles, Vietnam veteran Ed Ellis says he hopes the demonstrations will be the "tipping point" against the war.
Overseas, tens of thousands marched in Madrid. Spaniards called not only for the US to get out of Iraq but to close the prison for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Activists in Budapest, Hungary, lit torches and formed a giant peace sign. Smaller protests were staged in Greece and Turkey.
