Police: Columbia man stabs himself, jumps out of window

(Columbia)December 1, 2006 - Friday morning Columbia officials responded to a domestic call at a duplex near the Drew Wellness Center. Authorities arriving at the residence on Georgia Elam Lane found a broken window, and a man with a death wish.

Police and probation officers had come there to arrest 39-year-old Richard Lee Brockington. The charges - probation violation and criminal domestic violence.

Brockington was not ready to go quietly. Police say Brockington locked himself in an upstairs bedroom, with a note on the door saying he wanted police to kill him. They say Brockington started a fire and stabbed himself in the stomach.

As the smoke got thicker, he jumped out the window. A neighbor who declined to appear on camera says Brockington dove out of the corner window, landing face down on the ground, apparently unconscious. Officers managed to pull him next door, away from the burning home.

In the CDV warrant, Brockington's wife of five years says he punched her in the head, choked her and bit her in the shoulder last weekend.

Only a few hours after Friday's fire, Columbia Housing Authority workers began cleaning up the damage. Longtime resident Thelma Thompson says the incident was out of character for a normally quiet neighborhood.

At last report, Brockington was still hospitalized and expected to survive his injuries.
