(Irmo) November 10, 2006 - A Dutch Fork High School senior has died after police say she tried to beat a freight train.

Megan Preston was in critical condition since the train hit her car, and she passed away Thursday night, November 9, at 11:46pm, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Near midnight on October 31, the car the 17-year-old was driving was struck by a freight train on Harbison Boulevard. Preston was airlifted to Palmetto Richland Hospital.

Officials say the Dutch Fork Senior thought she would make it across the tracks, but she did not. The bumper, windows, doors - practically everything on Preston's car was totaled.

Witnesses described the Chevy Cavalier as looking like a crushed pop can.

"One of the officers described it to me as looking like a comparison to a car driving over a can," said Police Chief Brian Buck.

The accident happened around midnight at the intersection of Harbison Boulevard and Saint Andrews Road. Officials believe it was a bad decision by the teen that led to the accident.

"The train conductor told us they saw the Cavalier go around the crossing barrier and was struck by the train," said Buck.
