(Pamplona, Spain-AP) July 7, 2006 - An American is being treated for a serious injury in a mock bullfight in Spain, at what's supposed to be a fun event.
Authorities have not released the name of the 31-year-old New York man. He was thrown in a Pamplona bullring by one of five young cows released after the first of the traditional bull runs through the streets of Pamplona.
A government spokesman says the American is in "very serious condition" and could be paralyzed. He was undergoing surgery.
Six injuries were reported during the bull run itself. Two were called serious. One of those was to another New Yorker, a 46-year old man, who had facial injuries.
Pamplona's running-of-the-bulls dates back to the 1500's and was immortalized in Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises."
