Wal-Mart reportedly looking to settle illegal immigrant case

(Bentonville, Arkansas-AP) Aug. 4, 2004 - Wal-Mart reportedly is talking settlement with the Justice Department over whether the retailer knew its store cleaning service hired illegal immigrants.

The Wall Street Journal cites people close to the investigation as saying the talks involve a fine of about $10 million.

If a settlement is reached, the newspaper says Wal-Mart is unlikely to admit any wrongdoing. Also criminal charges aren't expected. But, any deal would probably include provisions for a stiffer penalty if Wal-Mart is found to hire undocumented workers in the future.

A Wal-Mart spokesman tells the Journal that the company has always denied knowledge of any violations and that it is cooperating with the investigation.
