(4-7-2003) Who should determine how post-war Iraq should be rebuilt?

  • KF, West Cola, Sc:
I think the people of Iraq should be able to do that. We were when this country was signed the Declaration and we still are able to voice our opinions and not have what happens to those people over there. If they need help we should give it to them but not stay and dictate the way it has to be done.
  • SA, Columbia:
Those who fought to free it and the Iraqi people should decide how post-war Iraq is rebuilt.
  • CY, Cayce:
I feel it most certainly should be the coalition governments deciding how the New Iraq should be built.  We are the countries which spilled blood, so why should these other countries (ie, France, Russia and Germany) have anything to do with it.  They are the ones who are truly concerned with the oil.  Not the true United Nations. They do not deserve the pleasure of setting up this new government.  They opted not to assist in the liberation.
  • DA, columbia:
As an anti-war protestor, one of my goals is to indeed stop the US from invading Syria and Iran. Lets hope that doesn't happen. I hope the pro-war folks overpay their taxes to back up their views. Iraq has an estimated 15 billion a year in oil revenue, and the cost of the war and reconstruction will be hundreds of billions. We are already at a deficit here at home, a record one at that. (Isn't it odd how the fiscally conservatives have run up the biggest deficit in history). Where is Bush going to get that money? Well one plan is to cut veterans' benefits. But that will be just a drop in the bucket. So much for supporting the troops. Perhaps we could have saved hundreds of billions of dollars, a lot of American lives, and just let our troops stay home. Now Bush has created such a quagmire, he'll have to move our country closer to bankruptcy to get us out. Now he's got to beg for alms from all the countries he just shunned. Nation building in Iraq seems like a bad idea to me. That's why Bush's dad avoided it in the first place.
  • GC, Swansea:
Obviously, the winning side.  For a temporary time that is, but eventually given back to the Iraqi people.  The same way it was done with Germany & Japan at the end of WWII.
  • SL, Columbia:
There are many different groups within Iraq and I feel that there should be a representative from each to voice the opinions of that particular group and come to agreement if possible on where Iraq will go from here.  This way the Iraqi people feel that we are there for the betterment of there interest, and not to just imopse our government and/or way of life on them. I believe this will help with the trust of the people who don't  think we're really there to help them.
  • BG, Gaston:
The US, British Govt. and allies will be, not should be the final determining bodies in any reconstruction.  Iraq's oil resources will no doubt ease the economic burden.  However in the interest of international relations and not to mention the billions of dollars necessary for reconstruction... we should get the UN involved.    Reality is that we will of course limit their involvement and avoid becoming entangled in Europe's mad rush to reap the benefits of war.  The Germans, French , Russians and United  Nations are losing billions in dollars of oil related agreements and loans to Iraq.  For them it?s all about the money.
  • CP, Columbia:
Let them have video poker and a lottery.
  • DT, West Columbia:
In so far as possible the Iraqi people should determine how their country is rebuilt.  It is THEIR country after all, isn’t it?  Of course, being the victor in this war the United States Coalition will actually be in charge of the transition to Iraqi self-rule.  Those countries that were “on our side” should also have a say.  Those countries that weren’t should have no say at all  That is how the “game” of war is played, isn’t it?
  • MG, Columbia:
The "anti-war" demonstrators since they were the reason we held back our military from going into Syria and Iran.  Bwahahaha...Seriously, those nations that have put troops on the ground and who have supported us in whatever way they could are the obvious choices to rebuild Iraq.
