BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) - Lee County fire officials say the mandatory and voluntary evacuations issued for the Red Hill Community following a landfill fire have been lifted.
Captain Brian Holloman with the Lee County Fire Department says people are being allowed to return to their homes after air quality testing determined that there is no threat to the citizens of that area.
About 10-15 people near the fire were forced to evacuate.
Officials say a clay pit filled with materials was still on fire Tuesday near Egypt Road and Lila D Lane.
Authorities say the pit is an illegal dump site filled with garbage. They believe the fire started sometime around 3pm Monday afternoon, but aren't sure how it started.
Lee County Fire Lt. Brandon Holloman says firefighters from Lee, Kershaw and Sumter counties used 160,000 gallons of water and were unable to extinguish the flames.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control and the fire department will continue to monitor the situation, but the fire is now under control.
No charges have been filed yet.
