COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A St. George man walked into a Colleton County truck stop with multiple gunshot wounds Friday evening, and now officials are trying to figure out where the shooting happened.
Sheriff George A. Malone said deputies got a call from the Circle C Truck Stop on Highway 61 near I-95 in Colleton County around 6:30pm Friday. The caller said a shooting victim was inside their store, according to Malone.
Store manager Alice McGahan said the victim came in covered with blood, pleading for someone to call 911.
Deputies found 28-year-old Michael Hawkins with several gunshot wounds, including one to his jaw area. Malone said Hawkins had been driven to the truck stop to call an ambulance.
Hawkins was taken to the hospital, and Malone said he was conscious and alert. However, Malone said the location and perpetrator of the shooting are still unclear.
"He said he was walking down the road, and he heard an argument going on," McGahan said, recounting what she said Hawkins told her. "And he said, 'What the heck is going on here?' He said the next thing he knew he heard gunshots. And he looked down and realized he had been shot."
The incident is still under investigation and updates will be provided as they develop.
The people of Walterboro have been dealing with a series of violent shootings. Three members of a family are being laid to rest Sunday after a deadly drive-by this month. One of the victims was a 20-month-old girl.
