The victim, James Wilbur Lybrand, IIILEXINGTON, SC (WIS) - Two men already jailed on unrelated accusations were charged Friday with killing another man completely at random. The sheriff says murder charges are also pending against two other inmates.
Phillip Harold Jackson, 22, and D'Marqus Laquen Thomas, 20, both of Gaston, are charged with fatally shooting James Wilbur Lybrand, III, 20, on November 11, according to Lexington County Sheriff James Metts.
Arrest warrants say Lybrand was walking along Old Wire Road near West Columbia when he was shot.
Metts said the killing was not related to drug activity or gang activity, and Jackson and Thomas did not know Lybrand. According to Metts, Jackson and Thomas simply decided to kill someone and encountered Lybrand by chance.
Metts said Jackson and Thomas stopped their car, asked Lybrand to approach and shot Lybrand once in the head at close range. Emergency responders found Lybrand lying dead along the road at 5:10am.
Murder charges in connection with Lybrand's killing are also pending against Neo Desmond Colin Haywood, 24, of Swansea, and Justin Lavar Jones, 22, of Orangeburg, Metts said.
The four men are already in jail for a robbery and shooting at a home on Pine Grove Road last week, a crime Metts says is unrelated to Lyman's murder.
In the robbery, Jackson and Thomas previously were denied bond on charges of armed robbery, first-degree burglary, criminal conspiracy and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Haywood was denied bond on charges of armed robbery, first-degree burglary, criminal conspiracy and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Jones is awaiting bond hearings on charges of armed robbery, first-degree burglary, criminal conspiracy and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
