City of Camden looks to revitalize downtown district

CAMDEN, SC (WIS) - Camden is one of the most historic towns in South Carolina, and the city council there is hoping to raise capital in an effort to revitalize the downtown district.

"The more business in the city, the more tax revenue," said Councilman Ned Towell.

Towell owns a printing shop in downtown Camden. With more empty store fronts, he says the city could use more business.

Council has given the go-ahead for a seven member task force that will raise money on hopes of bringing it in.

"This group can go in with the funds raised, purchase a piece of property, invest in that property and sell it back to the community with hopes a business will go in there," said Towell.

Council members say it's also good for tourism, so when people come to places like here at historic Camden they will have more things to do around town.

Joanna Craig is the Director of Historic Camden.

"Someone could come here and spend a nice vacation and not have to leave to go anywhere else," said Craig.

She thinks more business means more tourists would come here to stay.

"We have a lot of people come all over the world to come visit us and I as I have said, if we put some more into Camden and into our history and in our tourism and horses, we'd be dangerous," said Craig.
