CLARENDON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Authorities in Clarendon County are ending a manhunt for two men who tried to run over a sheriff's deputy with a stolen truck.
Sheriff Randy Garrett said deputies were on Highway 527 in Sumter County Friday afternoon because of several home break-ins that have been reported in the area.
A car used in the break-ins had been described to police, and deputies clocked a speeding car matching the description and started pursuit. During the chase, found out the car was stolen in Georgia.
The chase continued to Interstate 95, and went through Sumter, Florence, and Williamsburg counties. Sheriff Garrett said the men ditched the car in Williamsburg County near the Clarendon County line.
One of the suspects jumped into a man's pickup truck while the owner was inside his home, Sheriff Garrett said, and tried to run over the deputy. The deputy fired shots into the truck, but the suspect was able to get away.
The deputy was not hit by the truck, and Garrett said he is okay. Deputies do not believe the driver was hit by the shots.
Deputies searched for the two men near the Williamsburg-Clarendon county line for several hours until the manhunt was ended. Sheriff Garrett says investigators believe one of the suspects used a cell phone to call someone to pick him up and help him escape the area.
Deputies recovered the second stolen vehicle, the one used to try and run over the deputy, in Georgetown County.
Garrett says they currently do not have a description of the suspects.
