Fort Jackson officials say more MPs are driving around the base as a security measure.
"We don't know exactly how far-reaching what happened at Fort Hood is, so we've done the prudent thing and increased our vigilance," said Deputy Public Affairs Officer Pat Jones.
All other security has remained the same, a spokesperson said. Officials didn't release the exact number of troops patrolling the fort.
Jones said many soldiers at Fort Jackson have either been stationed at Fort Hood, or know someone who is.
"The Army is a family," Jones continued. "The mood is pretty somber."
Fort Jackson's entrance gate is still open, and officials say there are no changes to the soldiers' routines.
Fort Hood, the largest military base in the country, is home to as many as 30,000 residents. About 13,000 troops are station at Fort Jackson.
