WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - "Foul play" is the phrase Lexington County deputies are using to describe the death of a Gilbert man found in West Columbia on Old Wire Road.
Lexington County Sheriff James Metts says authorities found the body of 20-year-old James Wilbur Lybrand, III early Sunday morning near West Columbia after a woman alerted authorities to a person lying in the road.
According to Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman, preliminary autopsy results show the Gilbert man died as a result of being shot once in the head.
Harman said a pathologist determined that Lybrand died within minutes of being shot with a handgun, the bullet causing a laceration in Lybrand's brain.
Sheriff Metts said Monday that detectives are actively pursuing leads and the circumstances of the shooting, as well as the motive for the shooting, remain under investigation.
Detectives have not yet identified the person or persons who fatally shot Lybrand.
