SUMTER, SC (WIS) - If you live in Sumter, lock your car doors. That's the warning from Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis.
He says more than 80 cars have been broken into over the past month.
Deputies say most of the vehicles that were targeted were unlocked with valuable items in plain view.
According to the incident reports, the crooks are stealing things like GPS systems, stereos and even guns.
Deputies are partially attributing the rise in crime to the bad economy.
"You know the unemployment rate, people losing their jobs, they go ... they're trying to get whatever they can to do to try to make their lives a little easier," offered Sumter County Deputy Latisha Billie.
Deputies are looking for the thieves, but they say you can help stop the thieves by helping investigators.
