KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A Kershaw County family is remembering the life of a 16-year-old.

Bart Hinson died Sunday night in a car wreck.

Brenda Lee's niece Mary Pittman was in the passenger seat. "They were so close," she said.

Her 17-year-old niece survived the crash, and was released from the hospital Monday morning. Hinson wasn't as lucky.

Scott Jones coached Hinson at Lugoff-Elgin High for the last three years.

"Everybody was his friend and he was a friend to everybody," said Jones.

Hinson was due to arrive at practice to prepare for his senior season on Monday morning. Jones had to tell the team Hinson was gone.

"Our kids were devastated, some beyond belief. I actually had one young man that actually didn't want to believe that it had happened and he was very distraught," said Jones.

Hinson's sister Cameron, now 14, is left without a brother. Hinson's father said his son loved life and his humor touched many.

"I couldn't do anything but cry because I just lost a son last year," said Lee.

Lee says Hinson and her niece were driving on Tower Road near Elgin to visit with a friend. The coroner says Hinson drove off the right side of the road and hit a tree. Both teens were wearing seatbelts.

The coroner says alcohol did not appear to be involved.

"He'll be sadly missed," said Jones.
