(Roswell, GA-AP) August 16, 2006 - Jubilation and horrible memories overwhelmed the family and friends of John and Patsy Ramsey when they learned Wednesday that an arrest had been made in the killing of the Ramseys' daughter, JonBenet, nearly 10 years ago.
Speaking to reporters outside her father's home in Roswell, Patsy Ramsey's sister, Pam Paugh, called the news "bittersweet." Patsy Ramsey died of cancer less than eight weeks ago.
As Paugh spoke, her youngest sister, Paulette Davis, drove up in her car. When she got out, she started crying as she embraced her sister. Davis said she was happy but also sad. She said it was just a very emotional time.
Paugh said that inside the home, their father was too distraught to come out and speak.
The Ramsey family's attorney, Lin Wood, in Atlanta pronounced the arrest vindication for both John and Patsy Ramsey. Wood said he only wished Patsy had lived to see the day.
Authorities in Boulder, Colorado, where JonBenet was murdered, once said the an "umbrella of suspicion" had been cast on them.
The Ramseys had lived in the Atlanta suburb of Dunwoody for several years before moving to Colorado in 1991, a year after JonBenet was born. The Ramseys moved back to Atlanta in 1997, within months after JonBenet's death.
Wood said the Ramseys gave police information about John Mark Karr before he was identified as a suspect. Wood would not say how the Ramseys knew Karr. Both Paugh and Davis said they didn't know the suspect.
The attorney said the Ramseys learned that authorities were focusing on the suspect at least a month before Patsy Ramsey's death. Both Paugh and Davis said they didn't know authorities were close to making an arrest, but were confident that police had the person responsible for JonBenet's death.
